INTRODUCING THE HIV/AIDS MANAGEMENT COURSE


Through a generous education grant from the International Aids Society The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) and the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, is able to offer a course in the management of HIV/AIDS at greatly reduced cost.Given the current state of knowledge on HIV/AIDS management and the fact that anti-retroviral therapy is becoming more affordable, it is now feasible to approach HIV/AIDS as a chronic medical condition. 


WHO SHOULD ENROLL


All healthcare professionals who need to acquire knowledge on the management of this condition as a matter of urgency. 

OBJECTIVES 

To enable participants to acquire or update skills with regards to: 

· the diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and STD’s 

· the management of HIV/AIDS and STD’s

· all aspects of counselling (pre and post test, therapy compliance) 

· having empathy with people ‘Living with AIDS’ 

· fulfilling their role as health care professionals in community mobilisation 

· understanding vaccine development and clinical trials 


COURSE FORMAT 

The course will combine self-study and face-to-face (workshops) tuition. 

SELF-STUDY 

A comprehensive easy-to-use self-study manual has been developed by leading national and international experts. The study guide eliminates the need for supportive
textbooks and provides a fully integrated self-study course on HIV/AIDS management. 

The following subjects are covered: 

· Basic immunology and physiology 

· Economic and epidemiological information 

· Disease management strategies of STD’S and HIV/AIDS, including diagnosis, treatment (inclusive of therapy, monitoring efficacy, side effects, compliance
monitoring, primary resistance, drug failure) and referral options 

· Vaccine development and trials 

· The ethical considerations surrounding HIV/AIDS testing and management 

· Counseling (lifestyle, compliance, terminal, pre and post test counseling) 

· The role of healthcare professionals in community mobilization 

· Living, coping and working with HIV 

Self-study will be assessed through a multiple-choice questionnaire. The self-study section will be accredited separately for CPD points. 

WORKSHOPS 

This face-to-face tuition will be presented by leading national and international experts and will take place over a 3-day period in the format of outcome-based workshops
focusing on the practical integration of the knowledge acquired through the self-study guide. Workshops will avoid a didactic approach and use case studies, role-playing
and interactive methodology. The workshops will be accredited separately for CPD points. 


CERTIFICATION


Successful participants will be awarded an attendance certificate for the workshop in the Management of HIV/AIDS by the Foundation for Professional
Development. 

CPD ACCREDITATION

Both the workshop, as well as the self-study component of the course, will be submitted for accreditation for CPD points. It is anticipated that CPD accreditation will
be as follows: 

Self- study 18 points 
Workshop 18 points 
Total 36 points 


COST 


International educational grant form the IAS is utilized to subsidize this program. The cost of the course will be R399.00 (vat included). This includes all study
material, assessment and the workshop including meals and refreshments.
