REMEDIAL CLASS

CARPE DIEM SCHOOL , GEORGE .

The Champ class is a remedial class at Outeniqua Primary School in George. The learners are integrated in all the activities and sports offered by a mainstream school, while receiving specialisedremedial assistance within a small class setting.

The class was started, as a privately financed class, in January 1999 by a group of concerned parents, under the guidance and auspices of Champ.

Currently, the class consists of 12 Grade 4&5 learners with a full-time remedial teacher, and 4 Grade 6 learners, who receive special assistance from an additional remedial teacher for three hours each morning.

The class is dual medium and all the learners benefit from lessons presented in English and Afrikaans.

The AIM of the Champ class is to provide specialised assistance in a small class setting and to return the learners to mainstream as swiftly as possible.

The main focus of the daily programme is the remediation of each learner’s unique reading, spelling or maths difficulties.

Programmes are adapted to each learner’s level and target specific problem areas, while still keeping abreast of the curriculum as set out by the Department of Education.

Close co-operation between the teacher, the parents and other professionals is considered to be essential for remediation.

Medication is closely monitored and referrals are made to therapists and specialists as the need arises.

Parental Guidance and Counselling is provided through regular teacher-parent contact, class
participation by parents, and monthly talks and meetings organised by Champ.

The Selection Criteria for the Champ class include:

• referral by a school, medical or paramedical professional;

• the learner must be of average or above average intelligence with a specific learning / attentional deficit;

• the learner must be assessed by the remedial teacher at the school;

• all information relating to the learner’s educational history must be available to be collated into a complete profile;

• as this is a private class, the parents must undertake a financial commitment in terms of the class fees ;

• the final admission rests with a panel of professionals appointed by Champ.

The Champ Class Fees for 2002 are available on request.
